ACAS Early Conciliation Scheme

The Acas Early Conciliation Scheme was introduced from today – giving Claimant’s the option to contact Acas about settling a claim. From 6 May 2014 Claimants will have to first contact ACAS about conciliation before they will be allowed to bring a claim in the employment tribunal.  The aim is to encourage settlement before a claim is issued in the employment tribunal.

In most situations parties will already have discussed the possibility of settlement directly, without involving Acas, especially where the employee has a solicitor advising. If your employer has made you an offer of a settlement agreement it is normal for the employer to pay towards the cost of you getting your independant legal advice from a solicitor.
